Semantic e-Science

چکیده
Jim Gray described e-Science as where “IT meets scientists.” (Hey et al. 2009) Science has now fully entered this newmode of operation, which combines science, informatics, computer science, cyberinfrastructure and information technology. It has been six years since the special issue Geoscience Knowledge Representation in Cyberinfrastructure (Brodaric et al. 2009) appeared in the journal Computers & Geosciences. In the ensuing years e-Science has changed how science disciplines conduct both individual and collaborative work. It is time to once again review the state of eScience research. A special session was held at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2013 Fall Meeting. This special session, titled Semantically Enabling Annotation, Discovery, Access, and Integration of Scientific Data, hosted 25 presentations on current e-Science projects. We initiated this special issue by sending invitations to authors in the 2009 Computers & Geoscience special issue as well as the 2013 AGU presenters. Submission to this special issue was also open to everyone, and we were happy to have received manuscripts from authors across the world. This finalized special issue consists of 11 papers, which cover various subjects in Earth and environmental sciences, and demonstrate state-of-the-art technologies in knowledge representation, data interoperability, vocabulary and data services, and data processing.

Background and Aim: Information systems cannot be well designed or developed without a clear understanding of needs of users, manner of their information seeking and evaluating. This research has been designed to analyze the Ganj (Iranian research institute of science and technology database) users’ query refinement behaviors via log analysis. Methods: The method of this research is log anal...
متن کاملSemantic Disclosure in an e-Science Environment
The Virtual Laboratory for e-Science (VL-e) project serves as a backdrop for the ideas described in this chapter. VL-e is a project with academic and industrial partners where e-science has been applied to several domains of scientific research. Adaptive Information Disclosure (AID), a subprogram within VL-e, is a multi-disciplinary group that concentrates expertise in information extraction, m...
متن کاملAn Improved Semantic Schema Matching Approach
Schema matching is a critical step in many applications, such as data warehouse loading, Online Analytical Process (OLAP), Data mining, semantic web [2] and schema integration. This task is defined for finding the semantic correspondences between elements of two schemas. Recently, schema matching has found considerable interest in both research and practice. In this paper, we present a new impr...
متن کاملPutting Semantics into e-Science and Grids
What is the Semantic Grid? How can e-Science benefit from the technologies of the Semantic Web? Can we build a Semantic Web for e-Science? Would that differ from a Semantic Grid? Given our past experiences with Scientists, Grid developers and Semantic web researchers, what are the prospects, and pitfalls, of putting semantics into e-Science applications and Grid infrastructure? 1. e-Science, Gr...
متن کاملFrom science to e-Science to Semantic e-Science: A Heliophysics case study
The past few years have witnessed unparalleled efforts to make scientific data web accessible. The Semantic Web has proven invaluable in this effort; however, much of the literature is devoted to system design, ontology creation, and trials and tribulations of current technologies. In order to fully develop the nascent field of Semantic e-Science we must also evaluate systems in real-world sett...
متن کاملDistributed Modelling and Simulation for collaborative E-science in Grid Infrastructure
E-science is collaborative science that is made possible by the sharing across the Internet of resources that is often very compute intensive, often very data intensive and crosses organizational and administrative boundaries. The semantic grid annotates the grid with metadata describing the resources it makes available. Semantic grid aims to incorporate the advantages of the grid, semantic web...
